Elite MBA Programs at Public Universities: How a Dozen Innovative Schools Are Redefining Business Education Reviews

Elite MBA Programs at Public Universities: How a Dozen Innovative Schools Are Redefining Business Education

Business education programs should practice what they preach: applying the principles of strategic analysis to play to their strengths and develop distinctive offerings that attract the most profitable customers—in this case, students, faculty, local communities, and the institutions that support them financially. With the costs of private MBA programs skyrocketing, public universities, which generally operate out of the spotlight of the Harvards and Whartons, have a tremendous opportunity to distinguish themselves as centers of innovative, high-quality education. Mimi Wolverton and Larry Penley conducted extensive research to identify the qualities of those public institutions across the country—from the University of Washington to Georgia Tech—that have successfully established competitive advantages, generally through a combination of cost leadership, differentiation, and focus.

Elite MBA Programs at Public Universities features 12 in-depth case studies by senior representatives of the respective institutions, detailing the process by which they developed and launched programs to raise their profiles and ultimately compete aggressively for talent and support. From developing strategic alliances with local businesses and complementary academic departments to establishing online and overseas courses to investing in state-of-the-art facilities, these schools are setting new standards for business education—and measuring the positive results, for example, in terms of increased funding, higher faculty research productivity, higher rankings, and greater student diversity. Wolverton and Penley frame the case studies by applying the concepts of strategy theory, drawing lessons that can be applied in other educational institutions, as well as for students of strategy and general readers interested in emerging trends in business education. The result is a fascinating peek behind the scenes at the most innovative MBA programs, as well as a rich canvas for observing the principles of strategic management in action.

MBA for Medics

‘Increasingly, doctors are seeing the value of learning the language of management. A number of doctors have learnt the language and skills by gaining a formal qualification such as an MBA. Many more have followed an experiential route. This book is for doctors who see the value that an education in management can bring, whether formal or informal. The ultimate reason for doctors to be ambitious and to gain a management education is not for personal gain or for more letters after their name, but for the prize of better, safer healthcare for patients.’ – From the Foreword by Sir Liam Donaldson This book encourages medics preparing for management roles to think about management and business as applied to healthcare, providing key insights on the skills involved and information for those who decide to study for an MBA. It informs health professionals on how they can improve the quality of healthcare through an understanding of business and management, including key areas such as understanding and managing accounts, marketing, and influencing and managing change. Healthcare professionals undertaking – or considering undertaking – MBAs or related management qualifications such as leadership fellowships will find this invaluable reading, as will consultants who are increasingly expected to be aware of and manage budgets for services. Undergraduate and practising doctors researching the options and roles available in medical management will also find this a vital source of information.

Rethinking the MBA: Business Education at a Crossroads

Rethinking the MBA: Business Education at a Crossroads

“Business Schools Face Test of Faith.” “Is It Time to Retrain B-Schools?” As these headlines make clear, business education is at a major crossroads.

For decades, MBA graduates from top-tier schools set the standard for cutting-edge business knowledge and skills. Now the business world has changed, say the authors of Rethinking the MBA, and MBA programs must change with it. Increasingly, managers and recruiters are questioning conventional business education.

Their concerns? Among other things, MBA programs aren’t giving students the heightened cultural awareness and global perspectives they need. Newly minted MBAs lack essential leadership skills. Creative and critical thinking demand far more attention.

In this compelling and authoritative new book, the authors:

· Document a rising chorus of concerns about business schools gleaned from extensive interviews with deans and executives, and from a detailed analysis of current curricula and emerging trends in graduate business education

· Provide case studies showing how leading MBA programs have begun reinventing themselves for the better

· Offer concrete ideas for how business schools can surmount the challenges that come with reinvention, including securing faculty with new skills and experimenting with new pedagogies

Rich with examples and thoroughly researched, Rethinking the MBA reveals why and how business schools must define a better pathway for the future.

From the supplier: Two innovative programs in the business college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, make extensive use of integrated software and a computer bulletin board system (BBS). The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree is a program for executives with at least six years of managerial experience. It seeks to enhance the student’s skills at developing group projects and communication skills. After evaluating a number of commercial packages, the RPI faculty selected Enable Software’s Enable, an integrated package that combines word processing, spreadsheet software and data base management with telecommunications capability. Using Enable on their laptop computers, the 21 of the 23 enrolled students communicate via a BBS system when not in class. Students in the Management and Technology MBA program, a four- to 16-week course of study for future technology managers, also use Enable, as well as a number of specialized manufacturing and marketing software programs.
